Adding Our Voices: Spiritual Care and Reflection in Mental Health and Healing

Editor’s note: David Hawkinson, MDiv, PhD, presented this workshop as part of Being Present: A Faithful Response to Mental Health, a symposium hosted by North Park University and North Park Theological Seminary on November 8, 2014 in Chicago, Illinois.

Mental health diagnoses and treatment to address different ‘disorders’ have an important but limited view of the human person. Many practitioners are not trained to respond to the spiritual dimensions of emotional and mental suffering. All who are involved in spiritual care in their vocation have a unique role in collaborating to help in healing the whole person. This workshop will touch on pastoral and spiritual diagnosis, the importance of biblical and theological reflection and how these skills might aid in the support and recovery of persons and families in distress.

  1. I love this. David Hawkinson was my Bible Teacher at Minnehaha Academy in Minneapolis and I will never forget the New Testament History class I took from him in 1986. David is a gem. Grace & Peace to you my friend!
